And so we continue…

Different Class is proving to be popular and we’ve decided to extend it. Jonathan’s series of readings finished in March, but he’s said he’ll do another six sessions from October. From this month Andrew McGettigan will be leading, shifting focus slightly to political ideas and education. Hope to see you along at The Wheatsheaf.

Being yourself

We’ll be back at The Wheatsheaf on Wednesday this week talking around ‘The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life’ by Ervin Goffman. There is an inevitable circular problem with topics such as this – can we discuss things like ‘impression management’ when we are apparently engaged in it at the same time? But then perhaps Big Ideas isn’t part of Everyday Life. We’ll let you decide…

We’ll be upstairs at the Wheatsheaf starting at 7.30pm this Wednesday 8th February 2012.

Tonight and beyond

I’m looking forward to this evening – I hadn’t read any Mannheim before now, but I think the reading is going to provoke some great discussion. We’ve got a similar number as last time signed up on Meetup – if you want to come along then follow the link on this site, or just turn up anyway. We’ll be upstairs at The Wheatsheaf from 7.30.

I’ve started putting more events up on the site. We have our annual Xmas do at the Wheatie again coming up on 16 December, and another Different Class announced for January. We hope you come to both: the December event costs £5 but includes food, and the DC event on 11 January is titled Who Are “The Elite”? which will use C Wright Mills text as the focus of discussion.

Some more detail

We’ve had a lot of interest in DC, and a fair few people are signed up for the first event on Meetup – we’re really looking forward to it. A bit more detail, as promised …

We’ll be upstairs at The Wheatsheaf and the first event is:

How do Rulers Win the Consent of the Ruled?

Preparatory reading: Weber, Max (1914), ‘The Types of Legitimate Domination’, in Economy and Society (large font text only)

We haven’t quite figured out how to integrate the various places we publicise Different Class on the web. DC is our first outing on Meetup which seems to be working well for us so far. We also have our Facebook page. Then this site. We’ll no doubt figure out something sensible though we’re finding it’s not straightforward thinking through how to making various social sites work together.

You’re not the boss of me

Our first Different Class is on how rulers win consent to be ruled. The discussion will be led by Jonathan White, Lecturer in European Politics at the LSE.

We’ll be at The Wheatsheaf in central London on the evening of 10 October. It’s free and anyone can come.

A bit of reading to do beforehand…
