It’s often said that we live in a brave new world of new media. Individuals’ blogs break stories within minutes, while ‘citizen journalists’ capture footage and images of virtually every event as it happens. What role, if any, is left for the traditional journalist? Has the newspaper been made obsolete by the web site? And how much do we know about who produces the media we now consume? Or has nothing much changed?

Tim Luckhurst is professor of journalism and the news industry at the University of Kent. He has been the editor the Scotsman, and a producer, editor and reporter on the Today Programme where he covered major foreign news stories. He continues to write for broadsheet newspapers in the
UK, US and Canada.
