The things is, I think we're currently reaching the end of an arc which began in 1994 with the release of Patrick Keiller's 'London' and the publication of Roy Porter's 'Social History of London' and received its political boost with the election of Labour in 1997 and the formation of the GLA. New Labour is dying and the money is running out fast. Now only the Olympics hang over us, a grim reminder of the price of hubris. When they finally happen, it will be like the fifth Starbucks opening on the street you moved to when it was still cool and you could afford to force other people's rents up. It's a stinking mile of chainstore shit now, but where else are you going to go?
